Happy Chinese New Year that is! The 2010 Chinese New Year began on February 14th with the new moon and involves a host of festivities lasting approximately 2 weeks. Welcome the Year of the Tiger (see a traditional chinese papercut version of the tiger below). The Tiger is a sign of bravery and brings protection, courage and power. Sounds to me like a much needed sign for this recovering economy. If you are looking for ways to welcome this encouraging sign, you don’t have to look far! Here are some local ways to celebrate this Chinese New Year!

Or at least have an excuse to unglue your eyeballs from NFL.com and media day to enjoy some home town sports news. And so it is with eager anticipation of this year’s 44th Annual Super Bowl that we look at the success of our local community high school sports teams as 2010 kicks off at great year.

During a planning meeting yesterday morning, our ceiling started to shake as if the financial corporation upstairs were having an astro jump party without us. My co-worker asked, “Hey, what IS that? Is it an… an earthquake?” to which someone quickly responded, “You think ONLY the roof would shake if it were an earthquake- oh come on”. Little did we know, just a few miles away, the center of a 4.1 earthquake struck at 10:30am. (more…)

The weather has certainly been hard to miss this week and with the lows reaching the low 30s (yes that’s Fahrenheit, not Celsius). We’re shocked at this cold spell and the snow that we’ve seen in the surrounding local mountains. It has looked a bit like driving to Tahoe on the drive to our San Ramon office this week. Today the snow had melted a bit on Mt. Diablo, but it was still there.
Our new homeowners are probably feeling a little more grateful for the energy efficiencies in their homes this week. With homes built to high standards for energy efficiency, the new SummerHill homes promise lower bills from PG&E. (more…)

Halloween parties with ghoulish treats, hot drinks and always too much food… Sound familiar?
Probably, and it sounds familiar to me too. Luckily, my family has always had enough (more than enough) food for parties, holidays, and every day. But some folks here in my community aren’t so lucky. Every month the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties provides food to more than 207,000 people. (more…)

As we all try to reduce our carbon footprint, we’re trying to be in our cars less and less, which means we’re looking to get what we need close to home. At SummerHill, we build infill neighborhoods, a fancy way to say that our neighborhoods are close to everything you need.
In a recent article for CNN Money, David Futrelle wrote about putting a price on walkability. Part of the search process for many homebuyers is determining how their potential new home will impact their life – convenience definitely adds a positive impact for a new home for all homebuyers.
