An Ode to Mail – Email, Snail Mail, all things Mail
A few weeks ago, I signed up for a number of shopping sites, which big surprise means I will be getting even more emails in my inbox. The good news is that being on the “list” offers me fantastic discounts, the challenge is that I now have even more emails coming into my personal email box.
Okay, and that’s another thing, I have 4 different email accounts – work, personal Yahoo, personal Gmail, and family account on SBCGlobal, oh gosh and then there is my secret shopping email account, so I guess that’s 5. So all of this email can get well a bit intense.
The big questions: How do we manage it all? Do we have marketing emails go to one email account and emails from people we know go to another? And, why do we sign-up for all of these emails to begin with – offers, promotions…?
Certainly email is a good way for us marketers to reach out to our prospective buyers to keep them informed about new Sales Releases, Events, and Promotions. And email is green as it saves paper, so email seems good, right?
And then there is snail mail, now my co-workers like to call me a chocolate connoisseur as I LOVE dark chocolate and as you may recall from earlier post that my all time favorite is Recchiuti in San Francisco, however I also identify myself as a magazine connoisseur. What is a magazine connoisseur? It’s a person that loves good magazines, of course!
Okay, so the good, the bad, and the ugly of my subscriptions:
- Staying on top of tech trends: Wired
- Staying healthy: Self
- General interest: Vanity Fair
- Women’s interest for fashion and the home: Marie Claire, Oprah, Real Simple
- Planning the next adventure: Conde Nast Traveler
- Trying to keep finances in order and get ahead Smart Money & Fortune
- Just plain and simple enjoyment, no quality about this one: US Weekly.
- I’ve even added to this by sharing magazines from my friend and well doubling up to include Runner’s World, Shape, Fitness, Cooking Light, Martha Stewart, and Travel and Leisure. So that’s a lot of reading and I am an avid reader of books too.
Yet, there is type of mail in my snail mail that bugs me - the credit card offers! My snail mail is for bills (just a few as mostly I get those online now), magazines, and hopefully a few good old-fashioned, handwritten letters from friends and family.
The other stuff just seems like wasted paper. My two cents: if you want to reach me for an offer, send it to me via email, save the paper – I will click on your email if I’m interested in or need what you’re offering.
How do you feel about all things mail? How do you prefer to be contacted? If you’re a marketer, how do you reach out to consumers?
