What would it be like if the invention of the telephone came after email?

Recently I was talking with someone about technology.  We were trying to figure out how much is too much of a good thing?

And this led to a conversation about a conversation that they had with someone else about would happen if the order of technology changed?   Their friend shared that if the telephone came after email, it might go something like this  “cool, I can talk to someone live!”

The phone is seen as something of a bygone era as many of us have given up our home phones and gone to mobile phones and now smart phones where at the touch of a button we can whip off emails.   If email had come before the phone like say handwritten letters came before the phone, then how we communicate would be different.

Our CEO, Robert Freed, regularly encourages us (everyone in the company) to pick-up the phone and call someone.  He shares every chance that he gets that some things are simply better understood through verbal communication and better yet in-person.

There is really something to this logic.  How many of us have received an email that has made us upset only to realize that the person didn’t intend it to be that way?

Twitter, Facebook, Blogs have  also caused us to feel, well busier and busy for busy sake isn’t always a good thing.  It’s the purpose and how we’re using it.  Are we connecting with people?  Networking?
